what's going on you guys Tyler wandering therapist here I just wanted to talk with you today a little bit about the power of music in boosting your recovery but also boosting just a healthy wholehearted life [Music] I had a cool experience the other day where a friend of mine who's having a hard time we went for a drive and we went for a talk and afterwards on the drive home he turned to me and asked me if he could share a song with me and he just shared a song with me you guys can go look it up if you want it was by Rue Payne's and it's called Little Giant but for the situation that he was in and for the moment that we were having together that song just hit perfectly and it did something to me and it moved me deeply inside I ended up listening to the song maybe 10 times after that thinking about my friend and thinking about my own life and later on in the day it got me thinking just in general about the power of music and what it actually does for us in our lives and I think all of us know like we love music but why do we love music when I sit and think about why we love music why I love music is because it does something to me it stirs something in my soul and it has power it has power to move us to action it has power to allow us to feel empathy it has power to let us feel almost every emotion on the scale of emotions and sometimes I wonder if we take for granted the power that music has in our lives for good or for ill and I'll give you an example of this for ill when I was young and in high school my senior year I got really really depressed and part of that depression led me to come home from school every day and I would have this routine where I'd come home from school and I'd lay down on the couch in my front room and I would put on two songs on repeat over and over and over again the first one was Rems Everybody Hurts sometimes song followed by take me home by Alice in Chains now if you guys go listen to both of those songs they're very depressing songs there are songs that are they're a very heavy feeling the message is really kind of somber but for me being depressed there was a piece of me that kind of appreciated feeling like somebody or something could connect to what I was feeling the the challenges is that when I lay there for three hours with those two songs on repeat it would fuel nothing but more of the same and my depression continued and so it was this weird Catch-22 where the feeling felt kind of good in its own painful way but it was also fueling more of the thing that I didn't really want to feel and that I needed to get out of and since then in the years that I've kind of grown into my own recovery and in my own work I've come to realize that being intentional with the music that we consume really can increase the quality of Our Lives I I currently have a couple of playlists one of my playlists that I like and listen to the most is called The Humble Warrior playlist and it's all of the songs that I've accumulated over over the years that hit my heart that get me fueled up to feel like I want to go tackle the world or fight a good a good fight or be motivated to be the best person that I can be and I know that when I listen to that playlist I instantly get this little boost and it increases the quality of my life and increases the Savor and Vibrance of what I'm doing in my world and it definitely boosts my motivation and I'd be interested to hear and know what songs do that for you but I'd also give you the challenge to think about music in a different way instead of just turning on the radio and you get in the car or turning on your playlist of random music start to be intentional with why you're choosing the music that you choose in order to help facilitate good emotional health hope that's helpful you guys have a great day thank you so much for being here with me if you found this to be valuable for you please hit the like And subscribe button if you're facing particular struggles that you need help with or roadblocks that you're running into please submit a question I'd be happy to answer it for you [Music]
